Paver Border Cut Waste Calculator

A bordered paver layout has two different material demands: field area and a perimeter strip. The border consumes perimeter multiplied by installed border width, while field units cover the remaining area. This calculator applies separate waste rates to border cuts and field coverage, then adds repair stock so unusual border offcuts do not distort the entire project allowance.

Your results

Total pavers to purchase

2,135

Field, border, and retained repair stock.

Border paver allowance

How the calculation works

The calculator applies this relationship to the inputs above. Keep every measurement in the unit shown.

border area = perimeter × border width; field area = total area − border area
Total paved area520 ft²
Outer paved perimeter96 ft
Installed border width0.67 ft
Pavers per square foot3.8 pavers/ft²
Field waste6 %
Border cut waste14 %
Future repair stock20 pavers

Worked example

Use this example to check the calculator by hand before relying on a result.

1
Find border area
Perimeter strip is separated from field.
96 × 0.67 = 64.3 ft²
2
Find field area
Different waste rates apply.
520 − 64.3 = 455.7 ft²
3
Convert both to pavers
Round the combined result up after adding repair stock.
455.7 × 3.8 × 1.06 + 64.3 × 3.8 × 1.14 + 20

Assumptions behind the result

  • Border does not overlap itself at corners in the area approximation.
  • Unit coverage suits each pattern.
  • Waste rates reflect layout complexity.
  • Area excludes permanent openings.
  • Base and edge restraint are designed separately.

Mistakes that change the answer

  • Applying one low waste rate to curved border work.
  • Adding border on top of total field area.
  • Returning every matching spare unit.

Questions about paver border cut waste calculator

Why separate border and field waste?
Borders often create more small cuts, mitres, curves, and unusable offcuts than the repeating field.
Does perimeter include internal islands?
Add every boundary receiving the border, including internal beds or features, and ensure area is not double-counted.
Can border and field use different pavers?
Yes, but calculate their unit coverage and package rounding separately rather than using one blended rate.
