Cement Calculator
Calculate bags of cement and aggregate for your concrete project.
Concrete: The 3 Golden Rules
1. The Ratio
The classic recipe: 1 part Cement, 2 parts Sand, and 3 parts Gravel. Too much sand weakens it; too much stone makes it hard to finish.
2. Water
Less is more. The #1 cause of weak concrete is too much water. The mix should be like thick oatmeal, not soup. If it's runny, it will crack.
3. The Cure
Concrete doesn't "dry," it cures chemically. Keep it wet for at least 7 days (mist it or cover with plastic) to reach full strength.
Which Type of Cement?
Fast-Setting (Quikrete Red Bag)
Sets in 20-40 minutes. Best for setting posts (mailboxes, fences) where you don't want to brace them overnight.
High-Strength (Quikrete Yellow Bag)
Standard structural mix (4000+ psi). Best for slabs, sidewalks, driveways, and footings.
Mortar Mix (Green Bag)
No gravel. Used between bricks or blocks. Do NOT use for pouring slabs (it will crack).
Concrete & Cement Formula
To calculate how many bags of pre-mixed concrete/cement you need, first find the volume in cubic feet by multiplying length, width, and thickness (converted to feet), then divide by the bag yield.
Manual Step-by-Step Calculation
Suppose you want to pour a small concrete slab that is 10 feet long, 10 feet wide, and 4 inches thick. You plan to use standard 80-pound concrete bags (yielding 0.6 cubic feet each) with a 10% waste allowance.
