Curtain Fullness and Panel Width Calculator

Curtain fullness is the finished fabric width divided by the covered track or rod width. A 2× fullness target needs twice the coverage width before hems, overlaps, and side returns are considered. This calculator adds those fixed allowances, then rounds up to complete panels so the installation closes fully without flattening the intended folds.

Planning estimate only. Check measurements and real-world constraints before buying materials or making a commitment.

Your results

Required finished fabric width

How the calculation works

The calculator applies this relationship to the inputs above. Keep every measurement in the unit shown.

required fabric width = track width × fullness + overlap + side returns
Track or rod coverage width96 in
Target fullness2 ×
Centre overlap allowance6 in
Total side returns8 in
Finished width per panel52 in

Worked example

Use this example to check the calculator by hand before relying on a result.

1
Apply fullness
This creates the desired folds.
96 × 2 = 192 in
2
Add fixed allowances
Overlap and returns are not multiplied.
192 + 6 + 8 = 206 in
3
Count 52-inch panels
Four panels provide 208 inches before allowances.
ceil(206 ÷ 52) = 4 panels

Assumptions behind the result

  • Panel width is the finished usable width.
  • Fullness applies only to track coverage.
  • Overlap and returns are totals for the opening.
  • All panels share the same width.
  • Pattern matching and fabric length are calculated separately.

Mistakes that change the answer

  • Using window glass width instead of rod coverage.
  • Multiplying returns by fullness.
  • Treating package width as finished panel width.

Questions about curtain fullness and panel width calculator

What fullness should I choose?
The heading style, fabric weight, privacy goal, and desired appearance determine fullness; follow the hardware or workroom recommendation.
Are returns part of rod width?
Not in this calculator. Enter the face coverage as track width and add the total fabric wrapping back toward the wall separately.
Does this calculate fabric length?
No. Length also needs hem, header, repeat, and shrinkage allowances.
