Wallpaper Roll Calculator with Pattern Repeat

Patterned wallpaper must be cut in full repeat increments, so strip length is often longer than wall height. Round each strip up to the next pattern repeat, add trimming allowance, then divide the roll length by that cut length. Roll labels may quote total area even when pattern matching reduces usable coverage.

Planning estimate only. Check measurements and real-world constraints before buying materials or making a commitment.

Your results

Cut length per strip

105.0 in

Includes a 4-inch trimming allowance and pattern rounding.

Strips needed

24

Based on wall perimeter and roll width.

Minimum rolls

8

3 full strips per roll.

How the calculation works

The calculator applies this relationship to the inputs above. Keep every measurement in the unit shown.

cut length = ceiling((wall height + trim) ÷ repeat) × repeat
Wall perimeter to cover480 in
Wall height96 in
Roll width20.5 in
Roll length396 in
Vertical pattern repeat21 in

Worked example

Use this example to check the calculator by hand before relying on a result.

1
Add trim
Two inches at the top and bottom allow alignment and trimming.
96 + 4 = 100 in
2
Round to a 21-inch repeat
Partial repeats cannot start the next strip.
ceiling(100 ÷ 21) × 21 = 105 in
3
Find strips per roll
Leftover length may not make another full strip.
floor(396 ÷ 105) = 3

Assumptions behind the result

  • Pattern repeat is vertical.
  • A 4-inch trimming allowance is used.
  • Rolls come from the same dye lot.
  • Walls are reasonably plumb.
  • Complex half-drop matches need extra material.

Mistakes that change the answer

  • Using label area without checking pattern repeat.
  • Mixing feet and inches.
  • Assuming leftover partial strips fit full-height areas.

Questions about wallpaper roll calculator with pattern repeat

Why does pattern repeat increase wallpaper waste?
Every strip must start at a matching point, so the cut length is rounded up to a complete repeat.
Should I subtract windows and doors?
Subtract large openings cautiously. Offcuts may not match the pattern or fit another full-height strip.
What is a half-drop match?
The pattern shifts on alternate strips. It can require more planning and material than this straight-repeat estimate.
